August 2: Last Bus to Wisdom

last bus to freedom

Last Bus to Wisdom is the story of 11 year old Donal Cameron's trip, via Greyhound bus, from Montana to Wisconsin and back again in 1951.
Donal lives with his grandmother and when she needs surgery for "female trouble" she sends him to stay with her sister, their only living relative.  The bus ride and it's cast of characters, his aunt Kate, and his trip back home with "Herman the German" are a great adventure that could only have happened when life was simpler in the fifties.
Charming, wise, and slyly funny,
Last Bus to Wisdom is a last sweet gift from a writer whose books have bestowed untold pleasure on countless readers.
Named a Best Book of the Year by the Seattle Times and Kirkus Review,
"Last Bus to Wisdom is a big-hearted, joyfully meandering work by a master."
