At University of Arizona, Tucson, broaden your perspective on the future of medicine at ASTEC, bioscience discovery and science at BIO5 Institute, Richard F. Caris Mirror Lab science innovation for creations like the Giant Magellan Telescope, while reliving the past at Coit Museum of Pharmacy and Health Services, one of the world’s leading collections of pharmacy and drug artifacts. Lunch break at El Charro's, and a light boxed sandwich, chips and soda for the bus ride home.
This was a previous popular LLL trip requested to be repeated. We’ve added even more to the trip to enhance your experience. The all day experience affords a cost savings by combining venues into one trip
We start the tour at ASTEC. Imagine medical students “treating” realistic human-patient simulators (high-tech mannequins) that are activated to talk, sweat, breathe, cough, bleed, and emulate a variety of medical conditions. Those capabilities provide lifelike medical situations for students to practice proper procedures and to be evaluated. Come take a guided tour of this experimental high-tech, learning environment in action at The Arizona Simulation Technology and Education Center (ASTEC) on the Tucson campus of University of Arizona’s (UofA’s) Health Sciences.
The recently redesigned 30,000-sqft facility is equipped with a 6,000-sqft “simdeck” that includes representative patient rooms, an operating room, intensive-care unit, and labor-and-delivery suite. It also boasts a 30-foot projector-based virtual environment, a synthetic cadaver, and a high-end, 3D printer-scanner for patient-specific anatomic models and prototyping.
Lunch stop: At El Charro’s—celebrating over 100 years in operation.

You will have the opportunity to participate in both tours.
The tour will split into two groups to enable alternating tours:
Group 1 will tour Steward Observatory and Richard F Caris Mirror Lab; followed by the tour of Coit Museum of Pharmacy and Bio 5 Institute tour.
Group 2 will enjoy a short walkthrough of the Coit Museum of Pharmacy and Health Services on the way to the Bio5 Institute tour.
Richard F. Caris Mirror Lab – large-scale scientific research and development facility. The tour starts at Steward Observatory. The 90-minute tour provides a unique opportunity to learn how innovative engineering and optical technology melds with manufacturing techniques to produce the largest and most advanced giant (8.4 meters / 27 ft) telescope mirrors worldwide! Visitors will see the unparalleled technology and revolutionary processes in making the next generation of telescopes that will explore deep into outer space and produce cutting-edge scientific research. See photo on the right: notice the man standing on the stage?

The redesigned Coit Museum of Pharmacy & Health Sciences originally opened in 1966. It contains thousands of artifacts on display covering the history of pharmacies and drugs–documenting the pharmacy profession from the 19th and 20th centuries. You’ll have the opportunity to walk through the Upjohn Pharmacy (Disneyland’s Main Street 1955-1970) collection, previously part of Disneyland’s Main Street U.S.A. (1955–1971) given to the UofA in 2008, and is now the centerpiece of the pharmacy museum.
BIO5 Institute - a powerhouse of bioscience discovery and innovation. The BIO5 Institute at the University of Arizona brings together world-class researchers and innovators from five core disciplines — agriculture, engineering, medicine, pharmacy and science — to collaborate for the purpose of solving today’s most complex and critical problems, including:
- How to prevent, treat and ultimately cure diseases that affect millions of people worldwide
- How to address the growing environmental concerns threatening our planet
- How to ensure food security and nourish an expanding global population
Due to the length of the trip, in addition to the buffet lunch at El Charro, we will enjoy a "Picnic on the Bus" en-route back to PebbleCreek. The picnic consists of a boxed sandwich from Baggins Gourmet Sandwiches, accompanied by chips, soda and water. Choice of roast beef, turkey or veggie sandwich.
