Are you curious about this technology that we use constantly on our phones? Join PC resident, Tim Stevens on Tuesday, March 4 at 1 p.m. to learn more. Instead of a Google explanation about GPS, this is an opportunity to learn the design history and background stories about how GPS became a practical tool.
Nowadays GPS is universal in our cell phones and powering Google Maps. To understand how it works you just need to know three things:
1) a finding by a scientist 400 years ago
2) soap bubbles in a bubble bath
3) a trick devised by the GPS designers in the 1960’s
Before hearing the trick, you’d think GPS would never be practical but after learning it, you’ll think, “I could have thought of that!”
Tim Stevens was a chief scientist at Lockheed Martin. He has worked on GPS satellites, on the GPS ground control segment and holds a patent for GPS receivers. Attendees, please bring your curiosity--no math or science skills are needed.
