Registion opens Dec. 2
On Tuesday, Jan. 28, 1 p.m., Kevin Hillstrom will discuss the variety of weather events common in the Sonoran Desert – from the monsoon season, through the “transition season” to the long, hot days of summer.
One might have thought, “it can’t get any hotter than the summer of 2023”. If you thought that, you’d be wrong! Summer 2024 was the hottest summer on record, and summer didn’t end when the calendar told summer to end. No! Summer continued with eighteen consecutive days of record high temperatures in September/October, the longest stretch of record high temperatures ever recorded in the United States.
We set record high temperatures in late October as well. It was a season for the ages. Why did it happen? In this session, Kevin will explain why it happened and will give us a weather preview for the remainder of Spring into the 2025 Monsoon season.
Fortunately, Pebble Creek has its own resident weather expert to explain it. Hillstrom, is a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) trained weather spotter and self-proclaimed “WeatherHawk”, who will take us on an “annual tour” of weather changes in Maricopa County. NOAA is the federal agency that provides daily weather forecasts, severe storm warnings, climate monitoring to fisheries management, coastal restoration, and the support of marine commerce. NOAA extends its reach through science from the surface of the sun to the depths of the ocean floor to keep the public informed of the changing environment around them.
For those interested in weather and the desert environment, this educational opportunity will reveal the dynamics that cause our monsoons and will “take a tour” of the life and death of a monsoon thunderstorm! Kevin will describe the end of the monsoon, called “transition season” and the potential for hurricane remnants to hit The Valley.
If you spend summers in Arizona, this is a class you don’t want to miss!
